LinkedIn URL Customizer
Turn your name into rule-proof LinkedIn URL candidates and claim the clean address your resume deserves, in about two minutes.
LinkedIn's rule: 3 to 100 letters or numbers, no spaces or symbols (LinkedIn's help article). This tool cannot check availability; you find that out in Settings when you claim it, and the steps are just below this widget.
- 100% free
- No signup
- Runs in your browser
- Nothing uploaded
"José Álvarez" with the word "ux" would produce: linkedin.com/in/josealvarez · linkedin.com/in/alvarezjose · linkedin.com/in/josealvarezux and two initial-based fallbacks, each length-checked against the 3 to 100 rule.
How it works
-
Type your name
Plus an optional short word (role or city) for fallback variants.
-
Pick a candidate
All candidates are pre-cleaned to LinkedIn’s letters-and-numbers rule, with lengths shown.
-
Claim it in LinkedIn
Edit public profile & URL, paste the handle, save. Then update your resume and signature.
What this tool does and does not do
It does
- Builds URL candidates only from the name and words you type
- Enforces LinkedIn’s published rule: 3 to 100 letters or numbers, nothing else
- Folds accents correctly (José becomes jose) instead of dropping letters
- Cleans any custom idea you type into a claimable form
It does not
- Check availability; only LinkedIn’s settings page can
- Touch your LinkedIn account; it prepares text, you claim it
- Invent additions to your name; every candidate is built from your inputs
- Store anything you type
What is a custom LinkedIn URL?
The address of your public profile. By default it is your name plus a string of random characters, which works fine and looks like a serial number. A custom URL replaces that with a handle you chose, linkedin.com/in/yourname, and it is one of the few profile upgrades that is literally permanent until you change it.
Why bother, honestly?
Three checkable reasons. It reads cleanly everywhere you paste it: resumes, signatures, slide footers, business cards. It signals basic care, the same way a tidy email address does. And it removes a small credibility tax: a default URL quietly says "I have not looked at my settings". No miracle claims required; two minutes for a permanent fix is simply a good trade.
Choosing well when your name is taken
Common names lose the clean handle early. The fallback order that ages best:
- Reverse order (nairpriya): still just your name, reads fine.
- Initial plus surname (pnair): short, clean, common among developers.
- Name plus a stable word (priyanairops, priyanairahmedabad): pick something that will still describe you in five years. Role families beat job titles; cities beat employers.
- Avoid: birth years (ages badly and leaks data), current employer names (you will leave), numbers with no meaning (back to serial-number energy).
The claim, step by step
- Build and copy a candidate with the tool above.
- On LinkedIn desktop, open your profile and click "Edit public profile & URL" at the top right. It opens the public-profile settings page.
- Under "Edit your custom URL", click the pencil, paste the handle, save. If it is taken, try your next candidate; the tool ordered them for exactly this moment.
- Sweep your old URL out of circulation the same day: resume, email signature, personal site, speaker bios, anywhere it is pasted.
The rule details that trip people
LinkedIn accepts letters and numbers only, 3 to 100 of them. That means no dots, no hyphens, no underscores, and accented characters need folding, which the tool does properly (Núñez becomes nunez rather than nez). Case does not matter; URLs resolve lowercase. And one practical warning from the rule being per-account: changing your handle later breaks the old one immediately, so claim the one you can live with, not the one that is clever this month.
Frequently asked questions
How do I change my LinkedIn URL to a custom one?
On desktop: open your profile, click "Edit public profile & URL" (top right), then the pencil next to your URL, type the new handle, save. On mobile: profile, three-dot menu, "Contact info" route varies, so the desktop path is the reliable one. Build a rule-proof handle with the tool above first, then claim it in one attempt.
What are LinkedIn’s rules for custom URLs?
3 to 100 letters or numbers, no spaces, symbols or special characters, per LinkedIn’s own help documentation (linked from the widget). The tool enforces exactly that: it folds accents (José becomes jose), strips everything else, and validates the length before you try to claim it.
Can this tool check whether a URL is available?
No, and we say so on the widget rather than fake it. Availability only reveals itself inside LinkedIn’s settings when you try to save. What the tool does: prepares clean candidates so your attempts are rule-proof, ordered from the handle you most want. Two attempts usually settle it.
Does a custom URL help with SEO or search?
Modestly and mechanically: your name in the URL reads better in Google results, on resumes and in email signatures, and it removes the random digits that scream default. Nobody outside LinkedIn can honestly quantify a ranking effect, so we do not. It is two minutes for a permanent cosmetic and credibility upgrade; that math works without inflated claims. The profile scorer counts it in searchability.
What happens to my old URL after I change it?
The old default URL stops working after a change, so update the places you pasted it: resume, email signature, website, bios. Do the sweep the same day; a dead profile link on a resume is a small but real credibility leak. The resume keyword match session is a good moment to catch it.
Should I add a keyword to my URL, like priyanair-ops?
Hyphens are not part of LinkedIn’s letters-and-numbers rule, so it would become priyanairops. Appending a short role or city word is a fine fallback when the clean name is taken, and the tool builds those variants from your inputs. Keep it short: the URL is an address, not a headline. Your actual keywords belong in the headline, where the headline analyzer can grade them.
